The server upgrade to Ping-O-Matic was really a great move. While beeing our most famous blog pinging service, there had been lot´s of site availability downtime recently (as you can read from the PingOMatic Stats as well). At least if you tried to access from servers in Europe for some days it had been almost impossible. Now, everything seems to be settled at best performance ever! Well done.

Ok I bet I can give you some suggestions that will fix your problem.

MEMORY MEMORY MEMORY.

Not more of it but just use it better.

First create a Memory drive on your system and run all these files from that drive. Also move your /tmp folder to ram. Make sure any php your using is buffering the output.

A servers hard drive is the slowest thing in a server. Don't through more harddrives at the problem just avoid the problem. Apache 2.2 has Memory Cache for commonly called pages and it can triple a servers speed by making sure everything you use is always available in ram.

Next How you call the pings

don't let the other sites poor performance reflect upon you. My search is partnered over a dozen other search engines and if one of those sites takes longer than a second to open (and I open them all at the same time) then they just don't get included in the results. Never let your visitors get punished by your partners because they won't understand its them not you.

[...] As I mentioned in the previous post, pingomatic had some overload issues at the beginning of this year. Performance was getting spotty. Well, as of one week ago, they have new hardware and should see more stable and consistent performance. I have switched back to pingomatic and see how things go. [...]

[...] Ping-O-Matic\'s server update seems to have greatly improved its bulk ping speed. This service is by far the best bulk ping service judging by the number of robots that crawl my posts after I notify ping-O-matic\'s RPC client. [...]

Matt:

Looks MUCH Better!

http://www.grabperf.org/homepage.php?test=141&page=scatter_trim_range&utrim=&ltrim=&ldate=20060307000000&udate=20060307140000

Now, if you turned on compression, and made that front page explicitly cacheable.....
